I am Grace, a rising junior at Stuyvesant High School. I'm currently participating in the Summer Immersion Program at Girls Who Code. This program serves as an introduction to html, css and javascript, as well as bringing together girls from all over the world to build a sisterhood formed from a common interest in technology.
I was born into a family that was slowly integrating into technology, so I grew up with considerably less technology then other kids. (I was always the one reading a book instead of looking at phone screens and playing games.) I didn't get a phone until middle school, and a laptop until high school. When I did get them, I was considerably excited. It was something new and exciting, and with the Internet, I would have the world at my fingertips. No longer did I have to use an old-fashioned calculator to do tax, and solve math. Technology could do it. Technology could do almost anything. Anything and everything.
I really liked aesthetic things. A delicate balance between contrasting figures. Brilliant colors shining- I had a really big imagination from reading all the time. When I got my phone, I started to read on the internet instead of actuall paperbooks. And the more I read, the more I realized that websites looked different. Some websites were minimalistic, others were highly efficient, but some were just UGH. They didn't look nice, they were hard to navigate, there were so many problems. It would be just my luck that the content was amazing. But the style of the website just detracted from everything. How could I fix this?
Technology of course! By learning how to create, style and develop a website, it would be easier to make a website with all the criteria I liked. Because I would be the actual creator. So here I am at SIP.
I also have a lot interests along with technology. Before I got really hooked, I was a big reader. I've got a number of favorite books, but Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Percy Jackson have been some of my all-time favorites. In my spare time, I like to write and draw, although both of these hobbies are fleeting- whenever I get inspiration, I put it down of paper, which works better than forcing ideas. In the past few years, I started getting fascinated with different languages, especially Korean and Japanese. These two interests came from listening to k-pop, k-dramas and anime, which gave me an appreciation for the different sounds that each language produces. With the coronavirus about, I've had more time to listen and watch then I had before, and so very recently, I happened upon a new k-pop group which holds my interest at the moment. Check out the sidebar for some videos of Ateez, the boy group I'm listening to right now.
Of course even with the current state of events, life goes on, and so I'm also preparing for the SAT as a rising junior. I'm working my way through a number of prep books and websites for english and math prep. I'm also preparing for a biology and chemistry test as well. During freshman year, I was introduced to biology and this year to chemistry; both courses were extremely intriguing so I decided to do a bit more research into them over the summer. I'm also taking the summer to review a few subjects that will be present next year, like some rusty spanish skills and a bit of united states history.
